What's available on the NHS
The NHS in Scotland covers all clinically necessary treatment to keep your mouth healthy and pain-free. This includes:
- Routine examinations and check-ups
- X-rays where clinically needed
- Scale and polish when required for gum health
- Fillings (amalgam and tooth-coloured where appropriate)
- Extractions
- Root canal treatment
- Crowns, bridges and dentures where clinically necessary
- Urgent and emergency dental care
NHS charges in Scotland
From 1 November 2025, NHS dental services in Scotland moved to a simplified charging system. Most adult patients pay a contribution towards the cost of their treatment, capped at a maximum amount per course of treatment. We'll always discuss the cost with you before starting any work, so there are no surprises.
Free NHS dental care
You're entitled to free NHS dental treatment in Scotland if you:
- Are under 26
- Are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
- Receive certain qualifying benefits (such as Universal Credit, Income Support or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit)
- Hold a valid HC2 certificate
Bring proof of your entitlement to your appointment. If you're not sure whether you qualify, ask us or check on mygov.scot.

We welcome new NHS patients. To register, give us a call on 01475 673 415 or email largsdentalsuite@gmail.com — we'll get you booked in for an initial examination and complete the registration paperwork at your first visit.
NHS or private?
Some treatments — like teeth whitening and cosmetic veneers — aren't available on the NHS because they're considered cosmetic rather than clinically necessary. These are offered through our private dental service. We'll always be clear about what's available on the NHS for you and what would need to be private, so you can choose what's right.
