How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

One of the questions we hear most often at Largs Dental Suite is, 'How often should I really be coming in?' The short answer is: for most adults, every six months. But the best schedule depends on your individual oral health.

    Why regular check-ups matter

Most dental problems — cavities, gum disease, even oral cancer — develop slowly and silently. By the time you notice pain or a visible issue, the problem is usually well established and more expensive to treat. A short check-up lets your dentist catch tiny issues before they turn into root canals, extractions or crowns.

    Who should come more often

NICE guidance recommends your dentist set a personalised recall interval — anywhere from 3 to 24 months — based on your individual risk, rather than a one-size-fits-all rule. Shorter intervals of every 3 to 4 months are often appropriate for those who smoke, have diabetes, are prone to gum disease, are pregnant, or wear braces or aligners. We'll always tell you exactly what we recommend for your situation — and why.

    What happens at a check-up

A typical appointment with us includes a full oral health assessment, a check for early signs of decay, gum disease and oral cancer, x-rays when needed, and a clear treatment plan if anything needs attention. We'll also discuss your home care routine and answer any questions you have.

    The bottom line

There's no fixed rule — the right interval is the one your dentist recommends for you based on your risk. Many adults are seen every 6 to 12 months. If it's been more than a year since your last visit, get in touch — we'd love to see you.
