Teeth Whitening: What to Expect

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested treatments at our practice — and for good reason. It's a safe, non-invasive way to noticeably brighten your smile in just a couple of weeks.
Professional vs. over-the-counter kits
Whitening strips and toothpastes from the supermarket can lift surface stains, but they're far weaker than what we use clinically. In the UK, only a dentist (or a hygienist/therapist under a dentist's supervision, after a dental check-up) can legally provide whitening treatments above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide — and the higher-strength formulas are what actually change the colour of your teeth.
What the treatment involves

We start with a full check-up to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and that whitening is suitable for you. We then take impressions to create custom-fitted trays. You'll wear the trays at home with a whitening gel we provide, typically for a few hours a day or overnight, for around two weeks.
Is it safe?
When carried out by a dental professional, whitening is very safe. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity, which usually settles within a few days. We'll talk you through how to manage it.
How long do results last?
Results commonly last around one to three years, though there's no fixed clinical figure — it varies a lot with diet and habits. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking will shorten that. A quick top-up every now and then keeps your smile looking its best.
If you're curious about whether whitening is right for you, book a consultation and we'll give you honest advice.
